Chapter 5
Chapter 5 is all about phonics. Phonics is "a way of teaching reading and spelling that stresses symbol-sound relationships"(DeVries p109). This is a skill students need to succeed in reading. By understanding the relationship between the smallest unit of sounds to whole words are all parts of reading. As a future teacher, I will use the principles of phonics instruction. First, I will base my instructions on what the students already know. For example, I will not jump to teach a lesson without assessing the students,to find out what they know or don't know. The second principle the book mentions is providing systematic instruction. Depending on the grade level I will teach accordingly. I will provide the students with books that are meaningful to the lesson and stories that they love.
